About

jw-omnp-photoEdwin Henry Landseer. William Holman Hunt. Leonardo da Vinci. Which of these artists do you think is the least valuable? Between 1863 and 1895, the British art market had a stunning answer to this question: The works of Landseer and Hunt, two then-contemporary painters, gained higher prices than those of the Renaissance master.

When I discovered this fact in the course of my research, I immediately thought of the Modern and Contemporary art market today. Buyers are willing to pay astronomical sums for today’s “hot” artists. But is history just repeating itself? Are we devaluing the great art of the past in a rush to keep up with the trends of the present?

OMNP informs collectors about what has become a strong imbalance of commercial interest. When remarkable and even historically prestigious works from the 15th through the early 19th centuries sell for modest sums compared to their Modern and Contemporary counterparts, investment opportunities abound.

OMNP also offers a dynamic and comprehensive view of the collecting field, above and beyond sales and prices. In its early phases, the site will examine the continued importance of Old Masters, and their connections with Modern and Contemporary art. It will also provide listings of what quality Old Masters works are currently available.

I think you will enjoy the material on this site. Feel free to contact me directly, whether for advice on buying and selling or to discuss the many other issues surrounding the collection of Old Masters. Feedback is always appreciated.

Sincerely,

James Wilentz
