A light week of note follows in the wake of defiant success at the Old Master sales in London last week. Art Observed provided an entire wrap up of the media’s coverage, which can be accessed in the link below.
In other news, a sigh of relief can be taken after a tenebrist masterpiece by Caravaggio, “The Taking of Christ,” which was stolen from the Museum of Western and Eastern Art in Odessa last July, was thankfully recovered by Ukraine authorities. It is still astonishing to hear how paintings like these are so haphazardly secured by some institutions. Apparently thieves were able to bypass the museum’s alarm system by removing a window pane, instead of breaking it, to enter the premises. OMNP is no an expert in the field of protecting valuables. Nevertheless, a caper like this sounds like it came from the playbook of Boris and Natasha; its success is befuddling.
