Throughout late September and October, OMNP will be providing previews and results for the biannual crush of Old Masters auctions, at both the big houses and the lesser known one. We begin with Monday’s sale at Sotheby’s Amsterdam, of “A Distinguished Private Collection from Corsica.”
In OMNP’s opinion, the sales of private estates often produce OM gems that fly under the radar amidst all of the assorted furniture and ephemera that accompany them. While there are no must haves in this particular auction, a few items caught OMNP’s eye.
If the attribution for the stately portrait of an aristocrat in lot 89 holds up, this picture could be a steal. The picture certainly seems to be authentic-the lush pallete of the royal blue, gold, and purple velvet typifies the lush palette of De Largillière, one of the preeminent court painters under the reign of the infamous Sun King, Louis the XIV, whose ornate palace in Versailles recently received a rather peculiar redecoration, as covered by OMNP.
